Samsung Galaxy A Quantum Has A Quantum Encryption Chip For Added Security

Samsung and SK Telecom have introduced a smartphone that is secured with quantum encryption technology. Known as the Galaxy A Quantum, the smartphone is a variant of the Samsung Galaxy A71 5G which features the “world’s smallest” quantum random number generation (QRNG) chip.

A simple translation of the article using Google Translation explains that the QRNG chip generates “unpredictable and patternless” numbers that are used to make encryption keys. User data, while it is transferred or stored on specific services, is then protected by these keys which are needed for encryption/decryption.

So for apps like SK’s online payment system ‘SK Pay’, users will be able to set biometric authentication that is encrypted by the quantum chip. The telecom company describes that encryption by the QRNG chip can be used to keep personal documents secure from forgeries and general falsification.

The use of a QRNG chip in a smartphone seems to with the foresight of harmful use of quantum computers. The SK Telecom article (Google Translated) reads, “With the advent of quantum computers that threaten existing security systems, the importance of quantum security technology to defend them is also increasing. The technology competition between spears (quantum computers) and shields (quantum security) utilizing both characteristics is accelerating.”

Other than the QRNG chip, the other specs of the smartphone seem to be same as the Samsung Galaxy A71.

The rebranded smartphone sports a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display with FHD+ resolution. Galaxy A Quantum is powered by an Octa-core Exynos 980 SoC along with 8GB RAM and 128GB of internal memory. The smartphone functions on Samsung’s One UI 2.0 which is based on Android 10. It comes with three colour options Black, Silver and Blue.

The Galaxy A Quantum features a quad-camera set up with a 64MP primary sensor along with a 12MP ultra-wide angle sensor, 5MP macro sensor and a 5MP depth sensor. The smartphone has a 32MP selfie camera and an in-display fingerprint sensor. The 4,500mAh battery in the smartphone comes with 25W Fast Charging support.
